Quiet Time
I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Monday morning, the 21st of September, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.
We go to the Gospel of Matthew 6:6:
“But you, when you pray, go into your room (or your closet), and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
“Faith’s stronghold is the closet”, one man of God said, “however, if the closet door hinges are rusty and the room is deserted, the heart of that room is soon taken over by the devil himself.”
It’s a funny thing, if I am with a group of men and I don’t know them too well and they have come to meet me, often I will say to the man, could you please open in a word of prayer for us, and he starts to pray. I can tell you within a minute if that man spends time in his closet or not, just by the way he speaks to Jesus. We need to spend time in the closet.
A story which I will never forget was told about the great missionary, James Hudson Taylor. He took the Gospel to China. He was responsible for sending no less than a thousand families, by faith, with no support, to China to preach the Gospel. He came back to England once, probably to find more missionaries. He was in a small prayer room with quite a few other people praying, and a journalist from America was sent over to interview this great man of God. Well, the journalist said when he walked into the room, people were praying and they were happy, but there was one man sitting in the corner of the room with a big overcoat on, and he hardly said a word, and this journalist was saying to himself, “How am I going to make a story of this interview, because this man has basically said nothing? He just sits there quietly on his own.” But when they started to pray and it was his turn to pray, the journalist said it was like Heaven came down into that room, as this man started to speak with his God personally, and it was incredible. Not only did he have a story but he had a scoop because he met a man who spoke and knew God, and the hinges on his door were well-oiled.
Today, make a point of spending time in the quiet time room before you go out to face the world.
