He Who Overcomes

Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
— 1 John 5:5

Who are the victors of this world? Who are the overcomes of this world?

Only the believer. That is right - he who sincerely believes with all of his being that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is the Son of God.

If we go to John 1:12 - “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”

You know Peter the big fisherman? Jesus asked him in Matthew 16:15: “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And you know straight after that, and you can look at it in Matthew 16:18-19 - the Lord says to Peter, He gives the keys to bind or to loose on earth. There is power in the Name of Jesus.

Isaiah 7:14, “Immanuel”, which means: “God with us.”

That was written hundreds of years before Jesus was even born and the prophet Isaiah said that He would be born of a virgin. Now you know, you don’t have to be a gynaecologist, it is a physical impossibility for a woman to produce a child without knowing a man. And yet that is exactly what happened!

Jesus Christ, I am telling you my dear friend, is more real to me than you who are listening to this message.

I remember many years ago, I think it was in 2003, when I went to Israel for the very first time. I went to the Old City and I sat in the Garden of Gethsemane and I contemplated what Jesus had done for me. The Bible says that He sweated drops of blood - He was under so much pressure in Gethsemane, called 'The Olive Press'.

Then I walked up that road, the Via de la Rosa. I walked up that road and I tried to imagine the Master carrying a cross for my sake. Then I went into a very sacred church and I sat down, and for the first time I actually broke down!

My dear wife, Jill had to console me. I wept like a baby, completely overwhelmed by the presence of the Holy Spirit when I realised who Jesus was.

Who is He who overcomes? That’s right, he who believes that Jesus Christ is the soon coming King.

As you spend some time resting, think about it. And I want to tell you all those things that are troubling you... Where am I going to get my next job, when is COVID-19 going to finish, when is the lockdown going to lift, I am sick and tired of masks and sanitisers... Take your eyes off that. Put your eyes on Jesus and these things will pass away but He will never pass away.

Have a wonderful Sunday.
