Our Words

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
— Psalm 19:14

You know before I preach the Gospel I like to get on my knees - that’s right, in front of the crowd. And I pray this verse straight before I do anything else.

If we go to Isaiah 44:6

“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel,
And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
‘I am the First and I am the Last”

I want to say to you today that there is incredible power in the spoken word. John 1:1 says: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” God said one word and this whole universe came into being. Do you know that world wars started over one loose word spoken out of context? Do you know that divorces have taken place over words spoken out of place?

We need to be so very careful about how we speak. Do you remember that old saying: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me?” It is untrue, isn’t it? It is more the other way around. When you say something and you wish you had never said it, it is like a pillow that is cut open on a windy day, and those feathers fly all over the place. You can never put them back again, can you?

We need to be careful about how we speak.

But there is also healing power in God’s spoken word. When Jesus spoke the word, blind eyes opened, deaf ears were unstopped, cripples walked, lepers were healed and most of all, our sins are forgiven!

You know, the second memory verse that I learnt when I got saved, after John 3:16, was 1 John 1:9: “If we confess..." Do you see words? - "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Today, let you and I go out and speak life and not death. Speak in faith and not fear. You know every morning when I wake up, I turn over and I tell my wife Jill, that I love her. Now, we have been married almost 50 years and I am sure she thinks, ”Angus, I know that” but she loves to hear it.

Tell your wife today that you love her. Tell your husband today that you love him. Tell mom and dad today that you love them, and you will see what a difference it will make.

God bless you and have a wonderful day.
