Contentment

It is Monday morning, 4th January, 2021, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for the day.

If we go to the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 18, and I am going to read two verses from verse 22. It is the story of the rich young ruler.

“So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

Verse 23: “But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.”

I want to say to you today that I firmly believe that if the rich young ruler had given everything he had to Jesus, The Lord would have given it straight back to him, because Jesus doesn’t need any of our riches.

He owns everything anyway, but he was testing his heart.

We need to make some serious choices this year, and remember, it is how you look at things that will determine your happiness.

1 Timothy Chapter 6, verse 6:

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

We really need to take our eyes off ourselves and start fixing our eyes on Jesus and on our fellowman.

I heard a sad story once of a man who walked out of a divorce court. He said, “She tried to make me so happy.” That was his sixth (sixth!) divorce that he had just gone through! You see, it was all about him. It was never about the wife.

You are rich when you are content with what you have. I will say that again. You are rich when you are content with what you have.

We need to make some serious choices. You see, happiness is not getting more. Happiness is enjoying what you have.

And I think this year we need to make some serious choices. We are alive. God has given us a new year. What are we going to do about it?

Worrying doesn’t help at all. It just makes you sick.

You know my young daughter, Jilly, gave her mother and me a beautiful picture of a little baby having a bath in a bucket. And underneath it says, “You are rich when you are content with what you have.”

I want to encourage you this year to be content with what you have and then God will give you so much more.

May The Lord bless you as you look forward with contentment and peace to what God has in store for you and I.

God bless you and have a wonderful day.
