Into The Heart

For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
— 1 Samuel 16:7

Father God looks into the heart of a person and not at his outward appearance. I remember years ago, preaching down in the Eastern Cape, an old farmer came up to me, “Son”, he said, “preach to us so that we can see you.” I had to work that one out, but he wanted to see my heart.

Moses was not a great speaker, he was a stutterer but the difference was that Moses was called and anointed of God. The heart of a person is the inward, moral and spiritual life, including emotions, will and reason.

Jesus said to us in Luke 6:45:
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good;
and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil.
For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

One of my heroes was James Hudson Taylor. He took the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the inner-most parts of China - he was not much to look at. He was very small in stature, he had that peaches and cream complexion, coming from England, watery eyes - not a giant of the faith by any means to look at - but wait a minute!

A New York newspaper reporter came over to London when Hudson Taylor was back in England recruiting more missionaries. By the way, he was responsible for sending, no less than, wait for it, 1000 families to China to preach the Gospel - and he did it by faith alone, he had no other support. Well, he was in a little Bible study group one night and this American reporter came in. He was introduced to everybody and he was looking for this giant of the faith. There in the corner was a man with a heavy overcoat sitting quietly, not saying a word. They said, “This is James Hudson Taylor.” Well, the reporter was shattered. He didn’t know what he was going to report because the guy didn’t say a word.

Right at the end of the meeting, the house owner said, “Now, we are going to pray.” And then, the reporter said, he realized who he was talking to.

He had never heard a man in his life, have a conversation with God like Hudson Taylor. It was like he was speaking to His Friend directly.

I want to say to you it is the heart that people are looking for today, not what you look like, not how you are dressed. It is what is inside you that this world is desperately looking for and His Name is Jesus!

Have a great week.
